Michelle Colledge-Smith

Vice Principal 0.6 Associate Principal 0.4 - Deep Support.

I began at the Academy in 2001 as an NQT. My first role was teacher of Religious Studies and IT. I enjoyed this role very much and wanted to be a bigger part of students’ lives. In January 2003 I became Assistant Head of Year. This role gave me the opportunity to work with different groups of students and have greater contact with parents/carers. In 2004 I took on an additional role of Second in Religious Studies with the aim to grow the department with alternative subjects. My passion is for teaching and I have been very lucky to teach many subjects over the years, ICT, Life, Citizenship, Business Studies, Leisure and Tourism, but my favourite to teach is A-level Ethics. Here students can challenge their expectations and develop arguments to issues.

In 2005 I became Head of Religious Studies and enjoyed taking the department from strength to strength with record results. During this time I had my son Thomas; the older he gets the more he enjoys attending many of the Academy events.

In 2007 I moved to become an Assistant Principal with Deep Learning and Deep Support, tasked with supporting students on a day to day basis in the classroom. From here I moved to the role of Vice Principal at both Outwood Grange Academy and St Patrick Catholic College in Thornaby. This was a challenge working in two schools but an experience which gave me the opportunity to see other ways of working.

In 2016 I was appointed Associate Principal to support Mrs Laher with the day to day running and strategic overview of the Academy. This is a new experience for me but one I will relish.
