Outwood Book Swap

11 November 2011

Dear Parent/Carer

We are very pleased to announce the Outwood Grange Academy Book Exchange, a new way for your child to find a great book to read, to recycle books they've finished with and to encourage reading for pleasure.

The National Literacy Trust recently revealed that one in six children do not read a single book in a month. This becomes even more worrying when we realise that one in six adults have the reading age of an eleven year old. Studies have highlighted a positive association between reading frequency and reading attainment and that reading has a dramatic impact upon attainment across all curriculum areas. Reading for pleasure has a significant relationship with a person’s academic and career success as well as their overall happiness.

We hope that the new Book Exchange will help to counteract some of these shocking statistics and at the same time encourage a genuine enjoyment of reading. It is often the case that children don’t read because they have yet to find an author or genre that they enjoy. The Book Exchange should enable students todiscover some amazing literary favourites and receive recommendations from others about great books that they have enjoyed.

We are asking for your support in launching the Book Exchange through the donation of any books that your child is happy to share with others.

Donations Facts

•    Exchanged books may be kept forever so please make sure your child does not donate any book that they will want back.
•    We will happily receive a wide variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction,which are suitable for a broad range of ages and abilities.
•    If you have books that are more suitable for primary students, please send them along too and we will arrange for them to be distributed to our local primary schools.
•    Donated books can be deposited at S.I.D. (Student Information Desk) or with Jackie Bentley in the Learning Zone.

One person’s discarded books may ultimately be responsible for encouraging another child to read for pleasure! If you have any questions about the Book Exchange, please contact me at n.luke@grange.outwood.com.

We look forward to supporting your child develop a life long love of reading,

Yoursfaithfully
