Our Sixth Form Centre offers the opportunity for high achievement in the friendly and caring atmosphere which is the hallmark of Outwood Grange Academy. In the recent Ofsted Inspection the Academy was judged as‘Outstanding’. Some key statements made by Ofsted in their inspection report (January 2011) were:
• ‘Students in the sixth form are rapidly improving their progress and standards in all subjects’
• ‘The curriculum provides increased opportunities for each student to choose a course that matches their aspirations and interests because a wide range of academic, vocational and personal enrichment options are shared across Key Stage 4 and the sixth form.’
• ‘Because of new approaches to teaching and curriculum organisation, students arehighly motivated to learn.
• ‘In lessons, there is an increasingly positive climate for learning with all students extending their understanding through independent and collaborative work.
High quality provision is the foundation of what we do in the Sixth Form with students enjoying their own social and study facilities including our purpose-built Sixth Form library, common room and cafe-bar. They also share in the excellent range of specialist subject teaching facilities.
The majority of Outwood Grange's Year 11 students choose to join our Sixth Form alongside an increasing number from other schools in the area. September 2011 saw us enrol nearly 400 students into the Sixth Form - our biggest cohort ever.
We take great care to ensure a smooth transition from Year 11 into Post-16 studies so that our students are challenged to do well and supported to learn effectively. Students work through a focussed Induction Programme during the first five weeks before completing Contract Signing Evening in early October. This event is key in establishing the essential support network for our students of the Sixth Form Leadership Team, Sixth Form Personal Advisors and parents.
We pride ourselves on maintaining excellent communication links with parents through our Praising Stars progress and achievement programme, which is the core element of the praise culture at Outwood Grange Academy.
Last year's Sixth Form students achieved the highest results in the Academy's history. This means we are in the top 10% of providers in the country and it is therefore no surprise that more students than ever have joined the Sixth Form Centre this year. Our results put us way above the National Average for UCAS points (321) with all students securing either their first or second place choices for university education. Over 8% of our A2 cohort achieved the new A* grade which is well above the national average, which shows we are outperforming some of the best schools in the country including those in the independent and private sector.
The past few years have been a time of expansion in the Sixth Form Centre in both facilities and curriculum. We have a broad range of level 2 and advanced vocational courses, which offer natural progression from Key Stage 4 pathways as well as over 30 academic 'A level' courses. Our diverse and rich curriculum is possible through our innovative timetabling which allows many students to learn in 'vertical teaching groups' with Gifted and Talented' students accessing A2 level courses early or supporting our Level 2 learners with foundation courses such as Health and Social Care, Public Services and GCSE resits in Maths and English.
Our staff of over 100 teachers offer a wide range of skills and expertise to match the demands of our courses and the diverse needs and interests of our students. Teaching methods are varied and stimulating and information technology plays an important role in our work. The Sixth Form Leadership Team and teaching staff work closely to monitor the work and progress of all students on a regular basis, ensuring they reach or exceed set targets. In that way we pick up problems quickly and resolve them so that students can achieve the very highest levels. Teachers, students and parents share in these targets and we work together to meet them.
We are very proud of our personalised enrichment programme which offers students the opportunity to either gain additional qualifications with courses such as The Extended Project, CSLA, and ICT Skills. We also offer 'Community Experience' enrichment with students working in local primary schools; mentoring and supporting students in Key Stage 3 and 4; working on our College newspaper 'The Grange' or gaining essential work experience in their chosen field.
At Outwood Grange our students are not simply given lessons in examination subjects, but are taught how to undertake different types of study; how to organise their time effectively; how to find out about and apply for courses in higher education or jobs, and how best to present themselves at interview. Our Personalised Information and Guidance programme support students to make the 'right choices' and fully prepares them for the world of further education, employment or training.
We have planned our curriculum to respond to national changes in 14-19 education with the aim of increasing breadth and flexibility of study. We are keen to encourage young people to continue with their studies and there has never been a better time to do this at Outwood Grange Sixth Form Centre.
