Understanding the Praising Stars© report

Image

We use our Praising Stars© system to inform you about your child’s progress.  For those new to the process, each year you will receive six such reports. This frequency of reporting enables us to improve the quality and impact of our intervention with students.  We hope you will be equally pleased with the frequency of which you receive information about your child’s progress.  In brief, the report gives you information about:

Effort (E1-E6)

Parents/Carers MUST look at the effort grades first and foremost as a measure of your child’s performance towards meeting/exceeding their target grades.  This will provide a clear indication of the work ethic in particular lessons.

  • E1 Star students
  • E2 Very promising
  • E3 Hard working
  • E4 WAKE UP CALL
  • E5 TARGET
  • E6 EXCLUSION

Target level/grade for each subject.

Predicted/Attainment

This is either a National Curriculum Level, GCSE grade or AS/A2 grade (depending on the Key Stage).  The teacher will predict what your son/daughter will attain at the end of their current Key Stage/course based on their current performance and the teacher’s professional judgement.

Homework/Coursework

This indicates, where marked, that the teacher has a coursework concern (C) or a homework concern (H) or both (HC).

Attendance

This indicates, where marked with an X, that the teacher has a concern that your son/daughter’s attendance in lessons is having a negative effect on performance and progress.

Estimated year of completion

This indicates when your child will complete the course.

L Model

This indicates the target the teacher and student has set relating to the Learning Model.  See pages 5-15 in your child’s planner for further details of the Learning Model.  This is the skill or quality that your child will be working towards before the next reporting period.  We report on this for Praising Stars© 1, 3 & 5.

How does the Academy set student targets?

Year 7 – 11

The Academy sets individual student targets using Fischer Family Trust (FFT).  In the last few years we have set targets based on the achievements of the top 25% of similar schools in the country (this is known as FFT type D).  Students and staff have worked incredibly hard to achieve above and beyond this threshold and our consistently successful results reflect this.

This year we are stepping up to the next level and setting targets based on the achievements of the top 10% of schools in the country (FFT Rank 10).  We have clearly demonstrated for the last 3 years that FFTD is attainable as our students have achieved beyond FFTD.  We therefore need to raise the bar.  As a successful Academy we should aspire to better our students’ results year on year ensuring that every child finishes a key stage/course with the best possible level/grade.  FFT Rank 10 will help us to have that clear focus for our students.  Therefore, the targets we have set our students are aspirational and we hope that the majority of our students will be able to successfully achieve this.  As we continually evaluate and improve our teaching and learning, there is every chance, as we managed to do with FFTD, that as an Academy we can meet this aspirational FFT Rank 10 target for all our students.

To remain ‘outstanding’ we need to be striving for better results for our students and as an Academy we have reflected this shift in the targets we have set for our students.

Year 12 - FFT Rank 10 Targets

We have a new change to the Sixth Form targets in that these are now in line with Year 7-11 (however only Year 12 at the moment) and are therefore set using Fischer Family Trust.

Year 13 – ALPS (Advanced Level Performance System)

The Year 13 targets are still set by ALPS which is a nationally used A level, AS level and BTEC National analysis and training package.  We have decided to continue using ALPS for the current Year 13 as a means of continuation for these students.  In future, however, Year 13 targets will also be set by Fischer Family Trust.

How do we use this data as an Academy?

•    Across the whole Academy 6 times a year
•    Creates an interactive database for staff
•    Data investigated by the Senior Leadership Team, Heads of Departments and Learning Managers
•    Individual students are tracked against predictions based on their prior attainment and current performance
•    Intervention then follows individuals in order to get them ‘back on track’
•    Impact measured by results of next Praising Stars©
