Courses Available

KS4

BTEC Level 2Extended Certificate in Music

This is the equivalent to 2 G.C.S.E.’s. The units you will study are: Ensemble Performance, Exploring Composition, Working in the Music Industry and Professional Development in the Music Industry.

BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Music

This is the equivalent of 4 G.C.S.E.’s. You will study the following units in addition to the ones on the Extended Certificate Programme: Solo Musical Performance, Planning and Creating a Music Product and Producing a Musical Recording.

GCSE in Music (Edexcel)

This is 30% solo and ensemble performance, 30% composition and 40% listening Examination based on four areas of studies including Popular music, Non-Western music and Classical music.

Performing Skills Enrichment Option – Enrichment programme to develop performing and composition skills. This is mainly independent study.

KS5

AS/A2 Music (OCR)
AS/A2 Music Technology (Edexcel)
BTEC  Subsidiary Diploma in Music Technology(production) Level 3


Structure of the timetable across the key stages

KS3 -One 1 hour lessons per week

KS4 – Taught in vertical groups of year 9/10/11/students – 5 hours a week

A Level – 5 hours per week

Other information

Outwood Grange Academy is home to one of the largest music departments in the area. Due to our high intake and experienced staff we are able to offer a diverse curriculum using an extensive range of teaching methods.

The department puts a strong emphasis on continual development both for the students and staff. Facilities include a music technology computer suite and well equipped recording studio. The Music Department has three main teaching classrooms, each with its own supply of instruments and musical resources. The Academy also has 6 music practice rooms. During the day some of these are used by peripatetic staff for music lessons.

Learners have the opportunity to take instrumental lessons at school and will follow ABRSM / Rockschool or Trinity College music examinations if desired.

Extracurricular Activities

The department offer a wide range of music groups and ensembles as extracurricular activities. Many of the groups perform at local, national and international events. We currently offer:

Choir
Boys vocal group –OJAM
Swing band – J41
Music Theory Group - for those who wish to sit the grade 5 theory examination.

Musical events during 2010/11

These are some of the highlights from the last academic year.

•    September – performances at open evening. Choir, and soloists
•    October - Trip to ‘Jamil Sherrif’s’ Big band – Leeds College of Music.
•    October – performances at the student conference by soloists
•    November – soloists perform at Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel for ‘Soroptimists’ luncheon.
•    November – concert at ‘Alverthorpe Working Men’s Club.’ Coronary Heart charity. Choir, boys singing group, J41, soloists
•    November – ‘Shabnavada’ – Georgian choir visit and workshops. Wakefield Cathedral concert with Sabnavada
•    December – Christmas concert.
•    January – BTEC solo concert
•    January – ‘Young Voices’ at Sheffield Arena
•    February – BTEC ensemble concert
•    February – ‘Madness’ and music industry concert at O2 Academy, Sheffield.
•    February – AMP AID – Rock concert
•    March – National Festival of Music For Youth. Hosted by OGA and Wakefield Music Services. Choir/J41 and boys group perform.
•    March – rock groups perform in ‘Rock, Pop and Urban’ festival at Stockton –on –Tees as part of National Festival of Music For Youth.
•    March – Family of Schools concert in Scarborough
•    March -  Music technology students to Huddersfield university
•    April – A level recitals
•    July – Play Day – KS3 transition workshops and concert
•    July – ‘Performance Power’ – Wakefield Theatre Royal
•    July – Concert tour to Venice. Members of the swing band, choir and boys group.
