Literacy is an extremely powerful tool which will enable students to access all aspects of the curriculum. Our aim is to improve the literacy skills of all students at all levels.
Students need to recognise that they only get one opportunity to make a first impression and to engage their reader. Therefore, it is not acceptable to continue to make the same errors year after year.
• The English Department’s Written Accuracy Campaign
The English Department are acutely aware of the necessity for accurate written expression and regularly witness basic literacy errors that are not only impacting upon students’ success at English GCSE and A Level but also in wider areas of the curriculum. Their aim is to ensure that everyone is able to use the following list of language features accurately and reliably and avoid making the same basic errors year after year.
The priority will be the “First Five” and these will be tackled in English lessons in Years 7 to 13:
THE “FIRST FIVE”
Half term Focus
Autumn 1 was/were
Autumn 2 your/you’re
Spring 1 there/their/they’re
Spring 2 been/being
Summer 1 possessive apostrophe and its/it’s
Summer 2 consolidation
Students will be taught how to apply the rules for each of the “First Five” and will be tested throughout the half term on their ability to use them accurately. If a student struggles to master one of these basic language features, we will provide additional personalised support to enable students to improve their written accuracy.
This campaign is supported by all curriculum areas within the Academy to ensure that students recognise that their literacy skills need to be transferable to all curriculum areas and appreciate that it is not acceptable to continue to make these basic errors in any subject’s work.
We firmly believe that our students deserve the best start in life that we can give them and the ability to communicate confidently on a daily basis is an essential life skill. We are committed to ensuring that they are capable and confident communicators and whilst the campaign outlined above may seem small it can have a dramatic impact.
If you feel you have any questions about our Literacy Campaign please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Luke at the Academy.
