2010 Results Summary

KS4  97.2%  Pass Work Hazard Awareness Course (WHAC) Entry level GCSE level 3.

Courses Available

KS4  Most of the course for years 9, 10 and 11 is not assessed by examination, but against the National curriculum 2008 guidelines and 8 level scales.

The Work Hazard Awareness Course is completed by all students who attend LIFE lessons in year 10. It is a useful qualification in that it is a work based health and safety course and some students have said that they have secured Saturday work on the grounds that they are more workplace safety aware.

KS3 This year we have offered Emergency Life Saving for
years 7 (level 1), 8 (level 2) and 9 (complete course at level 3)  we aim to achieve 100% by the end of the year.

LIFE at OGA covers student’s statutory rights for discrete PSHEe, Citizenship, and work related education.

It is taught on rotation to years 7,8 and 9 and given one lesson a week in years 10 and 11.  In the course of these lessons, students study areas such as finance, politics, difference and diversity, Relationships and sex education, drugs tobacco and alcohol education, bullying (including cyber safety) rights and responsibilities, healthy life styles and management of risk among other real life issues.

Methods used are interactive and lively.  Students respond well to the understanding that they are learning to face real issues ready for real life.
The subject covers many of the SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) outcomes allowing for students to discuss and explore complex and often controversial issues.  It is alsointer-related with the Learning model for the academy, directed at improving experience of key skills and qualities needed to survive the 21st  Century.
