World Wide Skills (enrichment)

This course is designed to be a fun and interesting year investigating geographical issues that are topical.  The course develops wider knowledge and develops a range of learning skills that will help students in their GCSE’s, A-levels, university and future employment.

KS5

AS and A2 Geography

We follow the AQA specification.

The AS course includes the core units of Population Change and Rivers.  We also study Energy and Coasts.  The course has 2 exams both taken in June of the AS year.  The second of these examines geographical skills based upon the population and rivers units.  Fieldwork includes a river study in North Yorkshire and a coastal study at the Holderness Coast.

During the A2 course you will study Plate tectonics and associated hazards, Ecosystems and Global conflict.  All of these are examined in June.  In January, students sit an Issues Evaluation exam based upon a booklet which we study prior to the exam.

Other Information

The Geography department at Outwood Grange is one of the most successful in the Academy.  We are forward thinking and rapidly growing.  Our student intake is increasing every year and we achieve consistently excellent results.  The Geography team consists of 3 full time specialist teachers situated in a suite of Geography classrooms which include a computer room.

Our passion for Geography has resulted in rapidly growing student numbers at both GCSE and A level.   Many of our students go on to study some form of Geography at University, in 2010 this was 50% of our A2 cohort.

Student Voice tells us that 100% of our A level students would recommend the course to other students and that they consider the quality of teaching and learning in the department to be excellent.

Some feedback from the students:

“If you don’t understand anything you can see them at any time”
“Lessons are varied so you don’t just sit and write.”
“Lessons are always fun and teachers put in activities to enable us to learn”
“The teachers are always prepared to give up their time to help us”
