Other Information

The English Department is a large and successful department of 16 core members and further staff contributing to English teaching in Year 7 and Year 8. There is a combination of experienced staff and more recent entrants to the profession. The department trains a number of new teachers each year through the PGCE and GTP programmes, and several of our current permanent staff have been trained by us. We are also fortunate to have built relationships with a body of experienced supply staff to cover for extended staff absence.

At Key Stage 4, most students follow a three-year course leading to GCSEs in English Language and GCSE English Literature. We offer GCSE Media Studies as an options well as teaching a range of  Option English programmes designed to support students who need extra help in achieving a GCSE English A*-C pass.

At A level, we teach the specialist English courses, English Language and English Literature, both of which are very successful in terms of results. Many students take the combined English Language and Literature course, which has also led to success for students across the ability range. Each year, approximately half the entire sixth form studies a form of English at AS or A2 level, and a significant number of students proceed to Higher Education to read for degrees in English Literature, Language, Linguistics, or Journalism.
